Frequently asked questions
What is Simafri's VPS Pro?
A Linux server with root access, on Intel Xeon processors, ECC memory and mirrored NVMe SSDs, backed up every night, with Full-Stack Assistance included. You install what your project needs, and our team supports you from the system down to your application. See the overview.
Do I have root access?
Yes. You administer your server with root access, over SSH, and you install the languages, databases and services of your choice.
Which operating systems can I install?
Your VPS Pro is delivered with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, or with Debian 13 if you request it. For Rocky Linux or AlmaLinux, specify it when ordering. See Getting started.
What hardware does my VPS Pro run on?
On datacenter-grade servers: Intel Xeon processors, ECC memory that corrects errors on the fly, mirrored NVMe SSDs, and every block of data verified by checksum. Every size benefits, from Pro 1 to Pro 6.
Where are the servers located?
In France, in the European Union.
Do I need a domain name?
No. Without a domain, your server receives a name under vps.simafri.cloud, which works straight away. With a domain, a subdomain is enough: your current site and your mailboxes stay where they are. See Putting a site or an application online.
Are my websites served over HTTPS?
Yes. Encryption runs end to end, all the way to your server, where Caddy or Certbot automatically obtain and renew your Let's Encrypt certificate. See Putting a site or an application online.
How do I connect to my server?
With your SSH key, which you add in your client area, VPS section, and the SSH connection command shown in your server's card. See Connecting over SSH.
I have lost my SSH key: how do I regain access?
Create a new key (ssh-keygen -t ed25519) and add its public part in your server's card, removing the old one: it is installed within a minute.
Can I send email from my server?
Yes, through an authenticated SMTP relay on port 587: an address from your current email provider, or Simafri Suite when your volumes grow. See Network and sending email.
Is traffic limited?
No: your VPS Pro has no monthly traffic limit.
How do backups work?
Your entire server is backed up every night, encrypted and kept off the machine for seven days. Restores are carried out on request, by our team, and you choose the night. See Backups and snapshots.
Can I request a snapshot before an update?
Yes, from support, free of charge. It is kept for seven days at most and lets you roll back in a few minutes.
Can I scale up later?
Yes, at any time. Your server moves up to a larger size without reinstalling and your data stays in place; the new rate applies from the date of the change. See Sizes and scaling.
Can I run Docker?
Yes: you install Docker and Docker Compose as on any Linux server, and Full-Stack Assistance tells you the steps to follow for your system.
What is Full-Stack Assistance?
It is the expert support included with every VPS Pro. Describe your question or what you are seeing; we diagnose it and tell you what to do, from the operating system down to your application code. You stay in control and apply the solution at your own pace. If you would rather we act on the server ourselves, our engineers step in at an hourly rate, simply on request. See Full-Stack Assistance and hands-on intervention.
Who applies the system updates?
You do, with root access, at the time you choose; unattended-upgrades installs the security fixes every day if you enable it. To entrust the running of the server to Simafri, the offer is called Managed VPS. See System and security.
How do I pay for my VPS Pro?
Monthly, or yearly with one month free, from the Billing section of your client area, with the payment methods shown for your country. See Billing and renewal.
What happens to my server if a renewal is still unpaid?
It is suspended, with all its data kept, and restarts on its own as soon as your payment is received, just as you left it.
